Vancouver, BC – June 27, 2024 – University Canada West this week unveiled the newly named Sheldon Levy East Building in honour of former President and Vice-Chancellor Sheldon Levy. The dedication took place on Wednesday, June 26, at UCW’s Vancouver House campus.
“We are incredibly proud to dedicate this building as the Sheldon Levy East Building, recognizing the profound impact he has had on our institution,” said Dr. Bashir Makhoul, UCW President and Vice-Chancellor. “Sheldon’s work has significantly shaped the trajectory of University Canada West, and his legacy will forever be cemented in our story.”
Under Mr. Levy’s leadership, UCW experienced significant growth, expanding to more than 14,000 students from over 110 countries. In addition to partnering with Fulbright Canada, the leader in public diplomacy and academic exchange, Mr. Levy supported the establishment of the UCW MBA Games Team in 2022. The team made history this year by becoming the first team to hold both the BC MBA Games and National MBA Games trophies simultaneously.
Mr. Levy also advanced UCW’s reconciliation efforts during his tenure. He appointed UCW’s first Elder in Residence and established an Indigenous Advisory Council to guide and support academic initiatives. Under Mr. Levy’s guidance, University Canada West also joined the Moose Hide Campaign as an Ambassador Campus and began production on Understanding Indigenous History: A Path Forward, which was released on YouTube in April.
UCW is proud to dedicate this building to Mr. Levy, recognizing that there is no individual more deserving of this distinction.
“I am deeply honoured and humbled by this dedication,” said Mr. Levy. “This building’s renaming stands as a testament to our collective achievements and the transformative power of education and community. May it remain a constant representation of the core values and mission of UCW.”
