UCW’s academic English preparation course UAC 030 has been formally recognized as meeting the English language proficiency standard required for entry into all degree granting colleges and universities in British Columbia.
UAC (University Access Course) 030, was articulated on May 12, 2017, as an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) IV level course by the British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT).
“We are very proud of this accomplishment,” said Carel Schoch, University Canada West’s Chair of Academic Preparation.
“To be articulated by the BCCAT ESL Articulation Committee, which represents predominately the large post-secondary public institutions in BC, is quite an achievement.”
The Committee formally approved the course as meeting the English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 equivalency.
“It is a very rigorous process to have your course articulated at the EAP IV level,” Schoch explained.
The articulation required a well-developed curriculum that includes EAP level IV outcomes in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The announcement will allow UCW to expand its University Access Program to include students, who intend to pursue their degree program at another institution.
“I think it is quite an accomplishment to have the two-year-old University Access Program be successfully accredited by both Languages Canada and articulated by BCCAT,” Schoch explained.
Grade 12 or its equivalent is still required for entry into BC universities and colleges, but successful completion of this course will satisfy the English language requirements.
The 12-week long UAC 030 will be taking its first intake of direct entry students in October. University Canada West is offering placement tests to determine a student’s IELTs equivalency proficiency level.
Students not meeting the UAC 030 IELTS equivalency entry requirements will be required to take additional prerequisite courses before taking UAC 030.
