UCW is a business and technology oriented, teaching intensive university.
UCW offers undergraduate and graduate degrees (Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication and Master of Business Administration), both online and on campus. The university also offers the University Academic Preparation program for students needing to upgrade their English and the MBA Foundation program for students who need more preparation before entering the MBA program.
The University is currently growing with all programs increasing in size and with plans to develop additional programs in the business and technology areas. The academic year has four intakes: in January, April, July and October (each term is 12 weeks in length).
The primary purpose of the Academic Advisor position is to provide quality academic advising service to students on topics related to education planning, academic goals and course selection.
Under University Canada West’s (UCW) organizational structure, the Academic Advisor provides academic advising to students and reports to the Manager of the Academic Department and works closely with facultyStudent Services.
This position is integral to the delivery of quality services to students (domestic, international, undergraduate, graduate, on-line and on-campus), plus coordination with faculty and staff across all University programs in Vancouver.
Hours of work are variable.
The Academic Advisor will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the Company:
- Meets at least every second semester with continuing students in undergraduate programs and as needed with students in preparation programs and graduate students to plan for the upcoming semesters and to review/revise long range academic program schedules;
- Assists students in planning a program consistent with their abilities, interests and career demand; Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to student's program of study;
- Monitors academic progress of students, and make a follow-up with the students on any report of unsatisfactory work, including, but not limited to, probation, poor attendance, and failing students; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas and refers students to appropriate campus recourses for assistance;
- Maintains an up-to-date Advising Profile for all undergraduate students, with a summary of course planning for the students, dates of appointments, notation of special circumstances, etc.;
- Proactively contacts and is available for student advisees on a regular basis. Office hours should be preferably given to the advisee early in the semester. Advisor should plan for extended hours during the pre-registration advising;
- Provide advice to students in regard to academic appeals and other related issues;
- Interprets and explains the university policies and procedures;
- Evaluates transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to the applicable degree program;
- Assists AA students with admission requirements and developing plan for transferring to other universities.

Education and Experience:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
- Basic training in office practices, customer service and communication
- One to three years’ experience in student counselling, development, education or related field in a fast paced environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficient in Microsoft applications
