Primary Purpose

Reporting to the President, the Vice President Academic is responsible for the development and administration of academic policies, programs and personnel in accordance with a progressive academic vision and annual plan in a private, for-profit context. This Vice President is a builder, an innovator and a persistent leader of growth and change.

The VP proactively leads quality educational design and delivery. S/he vigorously supports studentcentric, collaborative teamwork on all UCW campuses, in all delivery modes, domestically and internationally. The VPA is a significant contributor to UCW’s Academic Council and interacts with the
Degree Quality Assurance Board (DQAB) ensuring that new proposals, program reviews, and academic and student service operations are not only of the highest academic calibre possible, but also highly relevant to the future careers of our graduates.

As an integral member of the senior leadership team, the Vice President Academic provides input into strategic and systems planning, document preparation and submissions. The VP measures and reports on the efficiency and effectiveness of this portfolio from both educational and business perspectives. Working in tandem with colleagues across the university, sets student admission and retention standards, and ensures that students’ opinions are invariably embraced within program reviews.

Specific Responsibilities

Accountabilities:

  • Aligned with University Canada West’s Mission, Vision and Values, prepares a 3 year business plan for educational quality and growth of UCW programs with provisions for accompanying student support
  • Accountable for degree quality within a private for profit operating structure, i.e., fiscal responsibility with a growth perspective
  • Develops business cases forecasting revenues and expenses (start-up and ongoing, operational and capital) and risks
  • Prioritizes, directs the development and signs off on comprehensively-prepared new program submissions
  • Ensures currency and consistency of course outlines, learning outcomes and curriculum across modalities. Applies current educational theory and practice and embraces local, national and global planning perspectives
  • Works closely with the President, VP Operations, and Registrar to advance university systems, processes, positive student results and employee engagement
  • Provides input to advance IT development of academic and administrative systems
  • Provides academic and student service oversight and inspiration through rigorous recruitment, hiring, orientation, professional development and review of faculty and staff performance
  • Safeguards UCW University and Program consent from the provincial government
  • Safeguards program accreditations
  • Monitors and reports quantitatively and qualitatively on student feedback, student outcomes and alumni success
  • Oversees faculty hiring, assignment, contracts, invoices, appraisal, professional development, and levels of scholarly activity
  • Develops academic standards, policies, procedures, and reference documents to guide and measure performance
  • Problem solves higher-order student, staff and faculty issues
  • Actively participates in external forums and networks to further the goals of the University
  • Assists with annual budget preparation and variance management
  • Bolsters UCW’s autonomy while working with Campus Support Service providers
  • Other related assignments

Position Requirements

To be successful in VP Academic position, an individual must be committed to developing, maintaining and demonstrating the following:

Education and Experience:

  • An earned Doctoral Degree from a recognized university
  • Progressive post-secondary academic and administrative experience
  • Extensive in-class and on-line education experience with domestic and international students
  • Recent, substantive scholarly activity
  • Understanding of public and private post-secondary legislation, structures and reporting in this province and knowledge of related operations (e.g., BC Council on Admission and Transfer)
  • Entrepreneurial and business acumen
  • Evidence of successful new program development and academic innovation
  • Evidence of implementing continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Evidence of exceptional leadership, communication and team building skills
