University Canada West commissioned Indigenous artist Bambi Smith to create a new crest for the regalia worn by the platform party, which debuted at Fall 2024 Convocation.

The crest on the back of the convocation robes features a raven and the moon. The raven represents transformation, creation, wisdom and knowledge. The moon appears in the mythology of all Northwest Coast nations–it is a guide and protector.

The new regalia was revealed during the first ceremony as the Platform Party Processional made its way to the stage led by drummer Sit-a-Luk Raymond Jones Peter, Quw’utsun (Cowichan) First Nation.

During his opening remarks, Dr. Bashir Makhoul, UCW President and Vice-Chancellor, thanked Bambi for her contributions. Bambi and her grandchildren then performed a Prayer Song that Bambi credits with helping her through the last four years.

The designs were commissioned as part of University Canada West’s commitment to reconciliation as well as celebrating Indigenous culture and knowledge. At important events such as convocation, UCW honours Indigenous culture with drummers, singers and welcoming messages shared by Indigenous elders.

Earlier this year, Bambi was commissioned to create a 24-inch yellow cedar carving to celebrate the 20th anniversary of UCW. The carving includes imagery of salmon, the moon and a human face. Bambi described her work as the Symbol of Life. She carved it in a circle to represent the cycle of life and as a reminder to keep moving forward and to keep reaching for your goals.

The carving Bambi created is on display at Vancouver House Campus.

Bambi is a Coast Salish and Cowichan First Nations artist from Vancouver Island. She has always been interested in wood carving, growing up with many talented carvers surrounding her. She started carving under the watchful eye of well-known artist Francis Horne and later studied under Elliot Jones for 15 years. Bambi is now interested in other mediums, including jewellery engraving.
