University Canada West hosted its first-ever Model United Nations Conference on December 8.

UCW students stepped into the roles of diplomats, debating global issues and crafting resolutions.

The students represented different countries in UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). They debated the topic of “The Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Racial Hatred, and Racial Hate Crimes in the World.” They made speeches, discussed, negotiated with each other, formed alliances, drafted resolutions and voted on resolutions.

The conference was chaired by UBC student Fiorella Vargas and UCW student Alejandra Bonilla.

The winners were:

  • Best Delegate: Jorge Morr
  • Outstanding Delegates: José Luis Rosales Gonzalez and Mariana Magaña Lama
  • Honourable Mentions: Malak Assad and Om Bahadur Bhandari Chhetri
  • Best Position Paper: Jash Khatri

The top students from the conference will now train to participate in the UBC Model United Nationals 2025 to be held February 6-9.
