More than 15 students and staff members from University Canada West (UCW) volunteered their time at the Vancouver Food Bank on March 8. Once classes concluded the group went to the facility to help sort through food donations that are shared with more than 26,500 people each week across Greater Vancouver. Each year the Vancouver Food Bank receives, purchases and distributes approximately 4.4 million pounds of food to help address immediate needs of the public.
“It’s important that our students are given the opportunity to give back to their community,” explained UCW Recruitment Manager Jefferson Lee. “This meaningful outreach brings us together to do something good for others and supports our obligation as a university to lead by example. In talking with students many agreed that these types of initiatives play an important part in settling into their new life in Canada and they continue to look forward to the next event.”
UCW organizes several volunteer initiatives throughout the year. The next event will be held on April 20 and will have students preparing donation packages at the Covenant House, a shelter for homeless children and youth.
